The Messara Valley in Central Crete is a region rich in both viticulture and mythology, famously associated with the myth of the abduction of Europa as well as the tale of the Minotaur and the Labyrinth.

As we navigate the winding mountain roads, we arrive at ancient Gortyn, a significant archaeological site that was once the Roman capital of Crete. According to legend, it was here that Zeus, transformed into a magnificent white bull, abducted Princess Europa, leading to their fateful union. Today, Gortyn boasts impressive remnants of its past, including ancient temples, the oldest Christian church on the island, and the remarkable code of law that offers insights into early legal systems.

In addition to its historical significance, the region is celebrated for its exquisite wines. Cretan indigenous grape varieties such as vilana, kostifali, and vidiano reflect the island's rich winemaking heritage that dates back to antiquity. We will visit a renowned family-owned winery, where we can delight in a tasting of their award-winning wines while learning about the production process. This experience will be complemented by a meal at a charming, authentic village tavern, offering a taste of traditional Cretan hospitality.

Following our culinary excursion, we’ll explore the legendary Labyrinth, said to be the very structure that housed the Minotaur, a creature that was half man and half bull. According to myth, King Minos commissioned the ingenious architect Daedalus to construct a hidden prison for this fearsome beast. Today, visitors can glimpse the cave and, guided by captivating stories, envision the complex maze that once trapped the Minotaur. This journey through both myth and history promises a rich and immersive experience in the heart of Crete.
